No, the cutting machine does not require a subscription. Design Space is free for everyone and offers basic fonts and images you can use to create and customise projects. If you want to be able to do everything our design software can offer, a paid Cricut Access subscription can unlock design features, access to more fonts and images, as well as 1,000+ project templates and priority Member Care.

Depending on what projects you want to make, you'll need select materials and tools to get started. Cricut Explore™ 5 comes standard with enough material to make up to 10 projects, plus a cutting machine mat, pen and Mini Weeder. If you want to skip the extra trips to the shop and really hit the ground cutting, the Cricut Explore™ 5 + Essentials Bundle includes enough material to make up to 250 projects. In this bundle, you'll get a selection of Cricut Smart Materials™, Cardstock, Insert Cards, Transfer Tape and more materials. You'll also get a cutting machine mat and an assortment of crafting tools.

While you do not have to use Cricut Smart Materials with your Cricut Explore™ 5 cutting machine, they're a great option to save time and simplify your making experience. Other materials require a cutting machine mat. No matter which Cricut materials you choose, this fast cutting machine offers precise cuts and incredible results.
