August quilt block centers around India lotus flower
India inspires us this month with its lotus flower as a sacred symbol of purity and a cosmic union of earth, water, and sky.
We think it makes a beautiful statement as our August Quilt Block of the Month.
This intermediate-level project cuts bonded fabric to create an India-inspired floral applique quilt block as part of a 9-block quilt series. For this block, you only need seven fabric colors (including the white background) and a single color of iron-on for the accents. This project works for more than just quilts — if you’re making a project that benefits from repeating patterns, like a table runner, this block works perfectly.

A few things to keep in mind when you’re preparing for this project:
- We recommend reading through the entire project detail.
- To make changes to this project, use the Mat Preview screen to move pieces and reduce waste. Don’t forget to mirror all of the mats except the pieces in white.
- Apply applique material (such as HeatnBond Lite) to the wrong side of all of the colors of fabric (except white) using applique product instructions. Remove the paper liner once the material has properly bonded and cooled before cutting.
