Meet the Contributing Artist: Danna Shurn

Danna Shurn, a talented artist from Alabama, started her creative journey with the simplest of inspirations and has grown into a passionate career. Since joining the Cricut family in 2013, Danna has turned her love for crafting into a way of life, designing thoughtful SVGs and fun projects that bring joy to others. Inspired by nature, her children, and her love for earthy tones, Danna’s work reflects her unique artistic voice and the memories that have shaped her along the way. From her early days of crafting during nap times to becoming a contributing artist, Danna’s story is one of creativity, heart, and the beauty of sharing art with the world.

How did you find Cricut, and why did you join the Contributing Artist Program?

I’ve been part of the Cricut family since 2013. Back then, I was an Air Force wife and a newly stay-at-home mom who dove into crafting during my baby’s nap times. I started with an Etsy shop full of embroidery designs and, in 2019, began designing my own SVGs.

When I saw the Contributing Artist Program applications open last year, I didn’t hesitate—I jumped at the opportunity! Designing SVGs and creating fun projects for friends and family has become such a passion of mine, and I’m thrilled to share my creations with others.

Where did your artistic journey begin?

I’ve been artistic since I was young. As a little girl, I dreamed of being a painter. I’d spend hours painting pet rocks and hiding them around the trees in my yard, building tiny villages out of cardboard and paper, complete with stick people. I loved diving into art and craft books, always on the hunt for everyday recyclables to turn into something magical.

Earthy, soft colors have always been my favorite, and growing up, my mom would let me decorate my room every so often. It became something special we shared, and it’s a memory I’ll always cherish.

What does creativity mean to you?

Creativity is something you’re born with; it’s a spark that fuels your imagination and transforms the simplest items into something useful or beautiful. It’s woven into everything we do, shaping what we create from it.

Who or what inspires you to create?

Nature and my children are my daily sources of inspiration. I love spending time outside with my kids, playing in the yard and soaking up the fresh air. They love to create just as much as I do, and I find so much joy in helping them discover and explore their artistic side.

What is your favorite type of craft, and what project are you most proud of?

This is such a hard question for me because I love so many different crafts! If I had to choose, I’d say creating art for my home. There’s something so special about having guests notice and admire a piece on my wall, a little trinket, or even a pillow I’ve made.

Describe your artistic style in one word.

Earthy. Gift. Fun. I love creating things that are not only fun to look at but also meaningful. Giving gifts is one of my greatest joys—there’s nothing quite like making something beautiful and seeing the happiness it brings to someone’s face.

Nature is a big inspiration for my art. I’m always snapping pictures outside, finding beauty in the world around me, and channeling it into my creations. It’s my way of bringing a little piece of the outdoors into everything I make.

If you were a superhero, what powers would you have?

I’d absolutely choose teleportation—for me, my family, and my friends! I love to travel but dread the process of getting there and back.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

Graduating from Purdue with a degree in Youth, Adult, and Family Sciences is my proudest accomplishment. It’s a milestone that represents a lot of hard work and dedication.

Do you collect anything?

Yes! I have an enormous collection of fabric and craft supplies. My crafting interests are all over the map—I sew, make jewelry, create signs, dabble in soap and candle making, paint murals, revamp furniture, do embroidery, work with resin, and even test out new recipes. The list could go on, but those are just a few of my favorite creative outlets!
