Cricut Vinyl Crafting Challenge: One Roll, Endless Possibilities

12 December 2024

By Rebecca Lopuc - Cricut UK & Ireland Social Media and Content Manager

Curious about how far a single roll of Cricut vinyl can go? I set myself a fun challenge to find out! This Cricut vinyl crafting challenge showcases the exceptional quality of Cricut vinyl, and the excellent value for money.

In this challenge, I break down the real cost per project by creating as many DIY designs as possible from just one roll. Whether you’re a seasoned Cricut user or a crafting newbie, you’ll discover budget-friendly inspiration to make the most of your materials without compromising on style or creativity. Let’s dive into this cost-effective crafting journey!

The roll of vinyl I chose to use was Smart Vinyl™ – Permanent (3.7 m) in Black which is retailed at £26.99. This is the most expensive Cricut vinyl roll that you can purchase for the Cricut Maker and Cricut Explore machines.

Armed with my roll of vinyl, I searched our favourite budget stores for appropriate blanks as well as using things within my home that could use a refresh too.

I gathered over 50 blanks for this vinyl challenge, and I thought there was no way I would use them all. Little did I know, I would AND would have material spare, too.

So much fun creating the projects in Cricut Design Space

Most of the time was spent on creating the projects in Cricut Design Space. I measured each blank and then created the design in the Canvas. To help me organise everything, I grouped each design with a guide that detailed which shapes belong to which blank. It also helped when I needed to tick off which projects were completed and what remained.

The joy of creation and the art of weeding

Then, it was time to start creating! Watching my Cricut machine cut through an entire roll of vinyl was so satisfying -it’s always fascinating to see the precision at work. After completing all the projects, I was thrilled to find I had about 12 inches of vinyl left, perfect for any recuts or quick fixes. And let’s face it, in crafting, recuts are almost inevitable! A few stray dots from the i’s went missing along the way, but having that extra bit of vinyl saved the day. It’s a reminder that planning for a little wiggle room is always a smart move!

Next, it was time to weed out the vinyl pieces we didn’t need – a process that took some patience but was totally worth it. To make things easier, I used a craft knife to section off the designs, which made removing the excess vinyl with my weeding tool much more efficient. Seeing the entire roll of vinyl laid out with all the projects was a moment of mixed emotions: exciting to see everything come together, but also a little overwhelmed at the sheer amount of crafting ahead. Visualising just how many projects I could create from one roll was incredible!

Then, it was time to get the Transfer Tape out and my XL Scraper Tool and adhere the personalised vinyl designs to the blanks.

Lastly, a simple “K” on the back of a hairbrush demonstrated just how quick and easy it is to add a personal touch.
