How did you find Cricut, and why did you join the Contributing Artist Program?
I was looking for a machine to help me with my craft business and came across Cricut. It wasn’t available in my country at that time, so I imported it from the USA and started my journey. As a graphic designer, it was super fun to make my own projects from scratch and see them come to life.
As an ambassador, I often participated in competitions that Cricut arranged after their launch. One day, while discussing the use of Cricut Access with a Cricut employee, I mentioned that I mostly design my own files and prefer to do projects from scratch. He asked if he should be happy or sad about it, and I instantly said he should be pleased because I was adding content that would inspire and attract Indians, leading to increased sales in India.
That’s when he suggested the Contributing Artist Program and encouraged me to apply. My happiness knew no bounds when I realized what that meant! Artists from all over India and the world would be able to use my designs to create something extraordinary, and I would be a part of that! I was overjoyed that this would also allow me to earn some money!
Where did your artistic journey begin?
I have been artistic since childhood! I worked as a graphic designer for seven years and quit my job to enjoy my pregnancy. Eighteen months postpartum, I couldn’t sit at home with my kid nor leave him with a nanny or daycare. I decided to start crafting again, this time more professionally. My journey started in February 2020, and within a month, the pandemic hit. I have never looked back, and I love what I do. My son is five now, and I haven’t looked back. I love crafting, and crafting is what pays my bills. Cricut has made it possible for me!
What does creativity mean to you?
Bringing together the materials you have access to, working on them and creating helpful things fills your heart with joy—something nobody could have imagined possible with the available resources!
Who or what inspires you to create, and why?
Inspiration comes from everywhere. An empty wall inspires me to make a frame; my five-year-old inspires me to make animal masks; and an apartment complex with barely any flowering plants inside inspires me to make paper flowers and add color to the otherwise boring corridor. And then, some days, I just want to treasure some experiences I had while traveling, so I make something that will remind me of those special moments.
What is your favorite type of craft, or what project have you created that you are most proud of?
I love paper crafts. There is so much you can make with plain sheets of paper! Also love felt crafting, though I have yet to work much with the medium, but I look forward to it. I love playing around with color-changing vinyl and experimenting with iron-on.
I am proud of several projects, but if I had to select one, it would be a Lippan-style rangoli design I made for a Diwali competition. Lippan art is a form of folk art from Gujarat (where I belong) in India. It’s traditionally made using mirrors and mud to create beautiful patterns. All I had was vinyl and paper. I had barely a few hours to submit, and Design Space had nothing to help me make something Diwali-related, as other participants had already taken all the designs. I made the SVG for the mandala and used silver and other vinyl to make an 11×11-inch rangoli for the festival, and the result was stunning! It also helped me win the contest.
Now, I can incorporate folk art into my craft and make things that are super unique!
Describe your artistic style.
- Pop: I love bright colors and things that scream attention! My artwork is no different. It’s mostly bright-colored and brings attention to itself.
- Geometric: a lot of my designs revolve around geometric shapes and patterns.
- Funny: I like a little humor in my art.
