THANKSGIVING (THE GOOD STUFF)

A while ago, a friend of mine and I were talking about recipes. Somehow the conversation turned to childhood ingenuity and concoctions created in the kitchen while unsupervised by adults. As children, my friend and her brother frequently mixed up a simple but very special list of ingredients in a big bowl and devoured its contents with satisfaction. The key ingredients of this magical mixture were these: flour, plenty of sugar, water, and a touch of food coloring! This recipe was meant to be consumed as batter, with spoons, right out of the bowl and had a very special name. It was referred to as..."The Good Stuff".

Not unlike my friend, many of us developed our cooking and baking skills in a similar manner. We jumped right into the task at hand and created fine messes in the mixing bowls (by the way, most of mine had raisins or coconut in them). Eventually, we refined our skills and those messes became edible accomplishments. Cricut Cake is a tool that has helped many of us to add that top-notch touch to our cakes and baked goods and gifts.

Let's all remember while we're enjoying delicious meals at our tables with loved ones this Thanksgiving, to make plenty of room for gratitude for all the "good stuff" in life (most things taste better that way anyway), and to load up our family tables with our own creations!

This week, be sure to enjoy a clever crafty tip on storing vinyl decorations and check out Crafty Kimber's exploration of the new Mystical Garden, Thanksgiving, and Gingerbread cartridges. As always, I wish you well in your crafting adventures.

Heather's Project: Decorated Round Boxes

Cartridges Used:
- Home Accents
- Plantin SchoolBook
- Storybook

Instructions: - For this project, I used paper mache round boxes that I found at my local craft store. I painted them with acrylic paints and let them dry.

- Once they were dry I used distress ink to create the antique look.

- I used my Cricut and Cricut DesignStudio to cut out circle patterns to go on the top of the lids. For this project I used the Storybook and Home Accents cartridges (I didn't have any circle patterns that fit the style I was looking for so I used the frame setting on Storybook and then used a plain circle from Platin SchoolBook on DesignStudio to cut a perfect circle.

- The top layer is letter J shift accent frame, the second layer is number 7 same settings. For the final layer I used Home Accents flower number 2.

- For the sides of the boxes I used the same patterns but the border settings.

-Once I attached all of the cardstock to the boxes, I used mod podge to give it a shine.

- I made the paper flower on top using a five petal flower. I don't have one that is rounded in my carts so I made mine using DesignStudio by welding a leaf together.

YOUR NOTABLE TIP

This week's great tip comes to you from message board members lovelybit10 and ColleenF!

Q. "I made some vinyl cut-outs for Halloween. Does anyone have an idea of how to store them until next year. This is the first time I have used my Cricut to cut vinyl and I hope to reuse the cuts. I am sure you creative people have already come up with a storage idea."

A. "How about storing them in clear plastic storage sheets, like you would store your scrapbook pages in an album? You can even put them in an album, separating your sections by holiday."

CARTRIDGE EXPLORATION

Cartridge Exploration Featured ProjectspacerSince this is the month to be thankful, I would just like to say that I am thankful for my Cricut, thankful for my dogs, and my family. Now is the time to sit down and reflect on all the many blessings that you have in your life. And armor-up for Black Friday. I've got my Christmas cartridge list all made out and ready to go! I would like to personally wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving, and may you find all the cartridges on your list. Now, onto business: this week, I'll talk about the Mystical Garden, Thanksgiving, and Gingerbread cartridges.

Thanksgiving is one of the new Seasonal cartridges. It has 31 images with layers. A few examples include: turkey, leaf, pilgrims, pie, pilgrim hat, pilgrim silhouettes, corn, pumpkin, grapes, and cornucopia. Some of the phrases are: "Gather Together", "Bountiful", "Thank You", "You're Invited", and "Please Join Us". Court from the message board used this cartridge to make a favor box for Thanksgiving (see pic or click here).

Cartridge Exploration Featured ProjectspacerThe new Gingerbread cartridge brings back memories of making gingerbread houses with my family. I remember decorating gingerbread men as a child and hanging them on the Christmas tree. Oh, this cartridge brings back so many sweet memories! This cartridge is one of the newest cartridges in the seasonal collection. You will receive 25 fun gingerbread images that you can cut out for scrapbook pages, Christmas party invitations, or to use with your Cricut Cake machine and make some cookies! Some examples of images are: Santa sleigh, Santa Claus, Christmas elf, bird, bell, mitten, top hat, Christmas tree, Christmas stocking, snowman, gingerbread boy and girl, presents, house, and wreath. I decided to make some gingerbread cookies with this cartridge (see pic), just to give you an idea of what you can do with this cartridge!

Cartridge Exploration Featured ProjectspacerMystical Garden is another one of those great Colors and Patterns cartridges for your Cricut Imagine. This cartridge has 20 wonderful patterns and fourteen solid colors. Describing color palettes is hard, but I will give it a shot: golden, burgundy, navy blue, olive, and browns. Click the photo to see the patterns that come on this cartridge up close. Some of these patterns would be great for Christmas scrapbook page backgrounds, even though they don't have that overt holiday look.

This wraps up my exploration for this week. Good luck on all of your many craft projects (I think I need to start working on my Christmas presents). Happy crafting!
